Special Olympics Michigan
Muskie Derby

The Muskie Derby is a catch, photo and release fishing event between the Detroit Athletic Club, the Grosse Point Yacht Club, the Detroit Yacht Club, and the general public sponsoring boats from the MOMC.  This is, we believe, the largest charity-only fishing derby in the state of Michigan .

A portion of the proceeds goes toward Special Olympics Michigan. Special Olympics Michigan provide sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities who live in our state. Athletes are given continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness; demonstrate courage; experience joy; and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

The balance of the proceeds goes to the MOMC. The MOMC is dedicated to the sport of muskie fishing, striving to provide members both fun and rewarding experiences. Members practice “Catch and Release”, and have an astonishing 99.9% release to harvest ratio. The MOMC develops and supports activities in education, conservation, recognition and community service. The MOMC is an affiliate of the Michigan United Conservation Club.

When:
This year the Muskie Derby will be held on June 24th at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Click for directions.

How to Participate:
Members of the various club and the general public can sponsor a boat.  Boat sponsors head a team totaling four anglers. Sponsors and their team will fish on boats owned and captained by members of the Michigan Ontario Muskie Club. Often the MOMC captain will also have a mate to handle much of the rigging duties. The MOMC captains are muskie fanatics and will provide everything needed to catch these fish that can exceed 50 inches and 40 pounds. If you like you may use your own boat and equipment.

The Days Activities:
The day starts early for muskie anglers with a continental breakfast followed by a full day of fishing. Boats leave the dock by 7:30. Fishing begins at 9:00 and lines are out of the water by 3:00. Everyone returns to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club for a steak buffet dinner. Following dinner there is a presentation of a check to Michigan Special Olympics, some great raffle items will be given away, and there will be a silent auction.

• Picnic lunch and drinks during fishing

Michigan
fishing license (DNR)
Canadian fishing license (Lakeside Fishing Shop)

The cost to sponsor a boat is $650 plus a voluntary contribution toward the fuel bill - $125 is suggested.
